Brighton Park Neighborhood Council: Kelly High School
Chicago, IL

The RDLF and the BPNC award the Logan Scholarship for Kelly High School Girls to five students each year. This scholarship is intended to take up the financial gap for students for whom post-secondary education would otherwise be unattainable. Support and communication is maintained with students as they move through college and subsequent employment. This attention to pastoral care makes students more likely to succeed in school as well as return and contribute to their community. The BPNC is also employing some graduates as mentors for 8th graders in Brighton Park elementary schools. This unique support system builds and encourages greater opportunities for the realization of academic potential.

One Million Degrees: Daley College
Chicago, IL

One Million Degrees is the only organization in Illinois dedicated to providing support to low-income, highly motivated community college students. OMD operates within 11 college campuses in the Chicago area and has graduated 440 scholars in the last decade. The RDLF was the first philanthropic partner to invest in OMD’s recent expansion to Daley College. All OMD Daley scholars now have access to free one-on-one tutoring in any subject, and are availed of frequent and personal check-ins with their own program manager.

Youth Guidance: B.A.M. and W.O.W. initiatives
Chicago, IL

BAM and WOW (Becoming A Man and Working On Womanhood) are programs implemented by Youth Guidance in Chicago Public Schools. Through these programs, at-risk boys and girls in grades 7 through 12 can openly express themselves and learn to develop new social and emotional skills. In group sessions led by highly-trained counselors, students learn new modes of communication, managing anger and depression, and gaining self-confidence. BAM and WOW’s success is illustrated both by first hand accounts of changed lives as well as statistical proof of academic success and reduced crime rates.
